Harrisburg should reflect on July Fourth significance

It's the Fourth of July holiday -- that midpoint between the Memorial Day sales and the back-to-school specials.

Pennsylvania's fiscal year has started without a budget -- like that's a surprise.

Gov. Rendell is still pushing his three-year income tax hike.

State legislators still want to cut spending -- just not theirs.

It should be pretty obvious to every Pennsylvanian: Our senators and representatives intend to protect their current lifestyle as long as there is a single taxpayer left to foot the bill.

Perhaps it's time to remember the real significance of July Fourth.

It's the day in 1776 when the Continental Congress adopted a document announcing American dissatisfaction with British rule.

Perhaps we should remember this from the Declaration of Independence: That all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among these life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That's us: the residents, the taxpayers, the voters.

Our elected officials tell us that difficult economic times require difficult choices. They are right.

We -- the governed -- should support candidates who put the good of the state above the personal gain.

And right now, that's not anyone in Harrisburg.
